Review: To Disguise a Truth by Jen Turano

Title: To Disguise the Truth
Author: Jen Turano
Publisher: Bethany House
Pages: 347
ISBN: 9780764235337
Publication Date: January 18th, 2022

About the Book:
When a man arrives at the Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency, anxious to hire them to find a missing heiress, Eunice Holbrooke realizes her past has finally caught up with her . . . and that she may no longer be able to hide under the disguise that has kept her safe for so long.

Arthur Livingston's goal in life is to make his mark on the world as a mining industrialist, but after the man who could help him achieve his goal is murdered, Arthur feels compelled to seek justice for the family--but he's left with more questions than answers after the eccentric Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency refuses to take on his case.

Desperate to conceal her real identity and avoid the irritatingly handsome Arthur, Eunice takes on a different case that requires her to go deep undercover and entangles her in one troublesome situation after another. When other secrets come to light, Eunice has no choice but to confront her past, hopeful that it will set her free but knowing it could very well place her life--and the lives of those she loves--in jeopardy.

My Thoughts:
I'm going to admit, I read this series completely out of order, but that is ok. This story works as a standalone as well. I've been wanting to read this one for a while and finally was able to. My eldest is a huge fan of Jen Turano, so it is a lot of fun to read her books together. We got the audio and dove right on in on our commute.

Eunice Holbrooke is a unique character. She has to have one of the strongest personalities to date of Jen Turano's books. She is one who is determined to keep her people safe. However, Ivan her bodyguard/ pretend brother is determined to keep her safe, which is a feat unto itself with Enice's determination to be more hands on and on the ground with her Inquiry Agency.

Author Livingstone is a man who you want to be weary at when first introduced to, but as you read more into who he is, the more you hope things work out. He is a gentleman determined to protect a woman he hasn't seen in years despite their history.

This story went all over and it was a thrill a minute. I love how this story featured Nellie Bly's research and offer a glimpse into this time. My daughter was horrified how women could have been treated during this time. Laws for women have come a long way for sure and opened up a good talking point.

Eunice was a delight to read about. Her story arc to me has been the most redeeming. She had to work through previous demons and fears and rely on faith. Her family situation was a very unique one and one that was completely out of her control. But when introduced her family it offered a whole new level into Eunice's character.

Safe to say, once this title was complete, me and my daughter dove into the first book of the series.

The narrator for this story did another wonderful job. It has been the same narrator for her other series as well, so it's a welcoming voice that reads to you.

Can't recommend this book enough.

Review: A Healer's Promise by Misty M. Beller (Justread Bookstagram Tour Review)

May 19, 2022

Title: A Healer's Promise
Author: Misty M. Beller
Publisher: Bethany House
Pages: 304
ISBN: 9780764238055
Publication Date:

About the Book:
She was called to be a healer, but her skills--and heart--have never been so challenged.

Levi Masters's time as a British spy hasn't ended, though his country's war with America has. After overhearing a scout reveal a discovery that could give America the upper hand in future conflicts, Levi is sent on one last mission. While trekking through the Canadian Rockies in pursuit of his former enemy, he is taken captive by warriors from a hidden mountain village.

Village healer Audrey Moreau is more curious than afraid of the outsider, and she's drawn to his commitment to honesty even at his own expense. Despite her arguments for his release, the council remains at an impasse. Compelled to help him escape, she sneaks him out of the village. But when Levi faces a life-threatening injury and the fierce mountain winter closes in, Levi and Audrey are forced to discover just how far they'll go to ensure the safety of the other and the love growing between them.
My Thoughts:
I have had a Misty's books on my TBR for a little while and I'm sad to say, this is the first book I've read by her, but I'm so glad I've been able to read it! Goodness, she has a wonderful talent for conveying her story and bringing you into her world. I'm so excited to go and read her other titles.

Audrey Moreau is a unique woman. She is a woman of strong faith and a deep compassion for people and their well being, whether it is physical or spiritual. She is a very strong character.

Levi Masters is a man you are unsure of when you are first introduced to him. He is lurking, mysterious, and you only see him from Audrey's eyes, but as you dive into his background and you start to find more about him and see that he is trying to move past what he is known for and change into what he wants to become.

Following Audrey and Levi was a thrilling story and I honestly can't wait to read more from Misty!

Turn My Mourning Into Dancing Title: Turn My Mourning Into Dancing

How do you find hope in hard times? Why is it important to have hope during difficult times? Turn My Mourning into Dancing will help you survive the difficult seasons and learn how to live a full life in the midst of them and beyond. With practical advice, Henri Nouwen will gently point you towards a way of life that is grounded in God’s constancy and rooted within eternal hope.

In this updated edition, Turn My Mourning into Dancing discusses five movements we experience during hard times:

 • From Holding Tight to Letting Go
 • From Fatalism to Hope
 • From Manipulation to Love
 • From a Fearful Death to a Joyous Life

Healing begins with taking our pain out of its diabolic isolation and seeing our sufferings in communion with all humanity, and all creation. Nouwen teaches us that our little lives participate in something much larger. Turn My Mourning into Dancing is a must read for:

 • men and women looking for growth and insight on life
 • anyone going through the grief process and searching for real solutions
 • anyone who has experienced a loss, betrayal, or hard times

Everyone grieves differently. It is a process, not a science experiment. Mourning shouldn’t last forever. Do you want the kind of life that allows you to dance even in the middle of the darkest night? Get the answers and find hope within your hard times with Nouwen’s works on spiritual growth.

From Holding Tight to Letting Go

For years I have loved watching trapeze artists. The love began when my then- eighty- nine- year- old father came for a visit. Let’s go to the circus, we decided one day. That evening we watched five South African trapeze artists—three fliers and two catchers. They danced in the air! The fliers soared and all was dangerous until they found themselves caught by the strong hands of their partners. I told my father that I had always wanted to fly like that, that perhaps I had missed my calling!

I am constantly moved by the courage of my circus friends. At each performance they trust that their flight will end with their hands sliding into the secure grip of a partner. They also know that only the release of the secure bar allows them to move on with arcing grace to the next. Before they can be caught, they must let go. They must brave the emptiness of space.

Living with this kind of willingness to let go is one of the greatest challenges we face. Whether it concerns a person, possession, or personal reputation, in so many areas we hold on at all costs. We become heroic defenders of our dearly gained happiness. We treat our sometimes inevitable losses as failures in the battle of survival.

The great paradox is that it is in letting go, we receive. We find safety in unexpected places of risk. And those who try to avoid all risk, those who would try to guarantee that their hearts will not be broken, end up in a self- created hell. C. S. Lewis wrote in The Four Loves,

To love at all is to be vulnerable…If you want to make sure of keeping [your heart] intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket of your selfishness. But in that casket— safe, dark, motionless, airless— it will change. It will not be broken—it will become unbreak-able, impenetrable, irredeemable…The only place outside of Heaven where you can be perfectly safe from the danger of love is Hell.

In so many ways, the more we insist on control and the more we resist the call to hold our lives lightly, the more we have to deny the reality of our losses and the more artificial our existence becomes. Our belief that we should grasp tightly what we need provides one of the great sources of our suffering. But letting go of possessions and plans and people allows us to enter, for all its risks, a life of new, unexpected freedom.

How can we live with greater willingness to let go? Another step in turning our mourning into dancing has to do with not clutching what we have, not trying to reserve a safe place we can rest in, not trying to choreograph our own or others’ lives, but to surrender to the God whom we love and want to follow. God invites us to experience our not being in control as an invitation to faith.

Review: Storing Up Trouble by Jen Turano

April 22, 2022

Title: Storing Up Trouble
Author: Jen Turano
Publisher: Bethany House
Page: 359
ISBN: 9780764231698
Publication Date: May 5th, 2020

About the Book:
After Miss Beatrix Waterbury suffers multiple mishaps due to her involvement with the suffrage movement, her mother decides a change of scenery is in order for her incorrigible daughter. Banished from New York, Beatrix is sent off for an extended stay with her Aunt Gladys in Chicago.

Mr. Norman Nesbit, a gentleman and a brilliant man of science devoted to his work, doesn't have time to be distracted with members of the feminine set. When robbers descend on the train, intent on divesting him from his important research papers, Norman is thrust into Beatrix's company when she has the audacity to interfere--leaving him no choice but to try to save her from herself.

When Beatrix's life is put at stake after she takes employment as a salesgirl, she and Norman find themselves propelled into each other's company again and again. With danger and intrigue dogging their every step, they become surprisingly drawn to each other--until information comes to light that threatens this relationship that's barely had a chance to blossom.

My Thoughts:
Jen Turano is one of my go-to-authors. I know that when I read one of her stories, I will get a witty and funny historical adventure with some of the best characters.

I got to enjoy this story on my commutes around town with my eldest. I think I now have her hooked on Jen Turano's books. She was giggling and asking questions the whole way through, which added to the fun of the story for me.

We were introduced to Beatrix in the earlier installments of the American Heiress series and she finally had her time to shine. And goodness did she shine! I have to say, this was one of my favorite jaunts through the pages. With Beatrix, she was joined by her aunt, her butler, a house full of ladies her aunt was training, and Norman Nesbit, who I have to say had the best growth of a character I have seen. He joined the ranks of one of my favorite heroes.

The chemistry between Norman and Beatrix was just fun. Norman was in his shell and Beatrix has always been comfortable being herself, which was instilled into her by her parents, who we are also introduced to in this story.

I love how Jen can weave historical people through her stories and just have them fit. In this book, we got see Mr. Selfridge at Marshalls and Company and Beatrix worked, in accordance to her aunt's rules who she was visiting.

My daughter and I enjoyed this story through the Audiobook, and it is a joy to listen to the narrator. She has a lot of fun reading these stories. And I love that it is the same narrator through the series.

This was a fun adventure and I can't recommend it enough.

My soul yearns, even faints,

for the courts of the LORD;

my heart and my flesh cry out

for the living God.

(Ps. 84:2 NIV)

Dearest Jesus, I bring before You what is both a request and a gift.

A request, because it benefits me. A gift, because it pleases You.

My heart’s desire is for more of You. I readily confess that my ceaseless wanderings have proven that, apart from Your presence, I am spiritually bankrupt. Only in You have I found eternal life and truth (John 14:6). Only in You have I found the way to the Father’s heart (John 14:6), and apart from You I have no good thing (Ps. 16:2).

You were the one whom the psalmist longed for:

Whom have I in heaven but you?

And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail,

but God is the strength of my heart and my

portion forever.

(Ps. 73:25–26 NIV)

Jesus, I desire only You because you are the strength of my heart and everything I will ever need— forever. My soul cries out for more of You, because only in You do I find true purpose and meaning. You alone fit perfectly the God- shaped hole I so often try to fill with worldly and selfish pursuits.

So, I echo John the Baptist’s words: May You increase, and I decrease (John 3:30). May You grow in me as I become less. And as I become less, live Your life through me. Only in that kind of life am I truly pleasing in Your sight.

James Hastings, a Scottish minister and biblical scholar in the early twentieth century, told an intriguing story about a German artist named Sternberg. As a little gypsy girl was sitting for a portrait in his studio, she noticed on the wall a half-finished portrait of Christ on the cross. The girl asked who it was. When told it was Jesus, she responded that He must have been a very wicked Man to have been nailed to a cross. The painter told her that, on the contrary, “Christ was the best man who ever lived, and He died on the cross that others might live.” Then the little girl looked at him with such innocence and asked, “Did He die for you?” The question haunted Sternberg’s conscience day and night, for though he knew the truth about Christ, he had not accepted Him as his Savior. He found he was no longer satisfied with life until he answered the question that you must also answer: Did He die for you? If so, then you must die to self and find life anew in the resurrected Savior.

Billy Graham, world-renowned preacher, evangelist, and author, delivered the gospel message to more people face-to-face than anyone in history and ministered on every continent of the world in more than 185 countries. Millions have read his inspirational classics, including Angels, Peace with God, The Holy Spirit, Hope for the Troubled Heart, How to Be Born Again, The JourneyNearing Home, and The Reason for My Hope.

Review: In Search of a Prince by Toni Shiloh

February 14, 2022

Title: In Search of a Prince
Author: Toni Shiloh
Publisher: Bethany House
Pages: 384
ISBN: 9780764238956
Publication Date: February 1st, 2022

About the Book:
It seems like a dream come true . . . until it forces her to question everything.

Brielle Adebayo is fully content teaching at a New York City public school and taking annual summer vacations with her mother to Martha's Vineyard. But everything changes when her mom drops a bombshell--Brielle is really a princess in the island kingdom of Ọlọrọ Ilé, off the coast of Africa, and she must immediately assume her royal position, since the health of her grandfather, the king, is failing.

Distraught by all the secrets her mother kept, Brielle is further left spinning when the Ọlọrọ Ilé Royal Council brings up an old edict that states she must marry before her coronation, or the crown will pass to another. Brielle is uncertain if she even wants the throne, and with her world totally shaken, where will she find the courage to take a chance on love and brave the perils a wrong decision may bring?
My Thoughts:
Review from Bookstagram Tour:

This book! Goodness. From the start this story it had me hooked.

Most girls I know have dreamed of finding out that they are a long lost princess, but for Bri, it wasn’t a dream. Her whole world is turned upside down as everything she knew was not true. The range of emotions she went through was strong and real. You felt them with her as Toni wrote about Bri’s journey. The depth that Toni writes is simply stunning! Her characters are just real. You feel for Brielle and you just want to hug Iris, her best friend. Who I thought was fantastic as they maneuvered through this new territory together.
Brielle’s world is thrown upside down, but her faith in the Lord is strong. She turns to Him for guidance and her faith is comforting to read. Her world isn’t perfect, but she puts all her trust in the One who is.

This is the first book I’ve read from Toni Shiloh, but not my last. She has such an amazing talent for storytelling. Her character leap from the pages and you are right there with them. With my commute, I live off of audiobooks, and the narrator for this story really made this story pop. I had a hard time stepping away, but when I did, I was able to jump right back in.
This book is everything you want in a story, right down to the most gorgeous cover.

I honestly can’t wait to read more books from Toni, this is one of my top books for the year.

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Artsy Read Girl.
Each week features a book related topic to spotlight your Top Ten.

Books with Names/Character Names In the Titles

Today was a fun topic. I wanted to see how many books had names in the title in a certain section, so I looked through what I had on my first bookshelf (well, currently only bookshelf....3 more are on the way). I came pretty close to 10.
These are all fabulous reads and am excited to share them.

Title: Fawkes
Author: Nadine Brandes
Thomas Fawkes is turning to stone, and the only cure to the Stone Plague is to join his father’s plot to assassinate the king of England.

Silent wars leave the most carnage. The wars that are never declared, but are carried out in dark alleys with masks and hidden knives. Wars where color power alters the natural rhythm of 17th century London. And when the king calls for peace, no one listens until he finally calls for death.

But what if death finds him first?

Keepers think the Igniters caused the plague. Igniters think the Keepers did. But all Thomas knows is that the Stone Plague infecting his eye is spreading. And if he doesn’t do something soon, he’ll be a lifeless statue. So when his Keeper father, Guy Fawkes, invites him to join the Gunpowder Plot—claiming it will put an end to the plague—Thomas is in.

The plan: use 36 barrels of gunpowder to blow up the Igniter King.

The problem: Doing so will destroy the family of the girl Thomas loves. But backing out of the plot will send his father and the other plotters to the gallows. To save one, Thomas will lose the other.

No matter Thomas’s choice, one thing is clear: once the decision is made and the color masks have been put on, there’s no turning back.

Title: Becoming Mrs. Lewis
Author: Patti Callahan
In a most improbable friendship, she found love. In a world where women were silenced, she found her voice.

From New York Times bestselling author Patti Callahan comes an exquisite novel of Joy Davidman, the woman C. S. Lewis called “my whole world.” When poet and writer Joy Davidman began writing letters to C. S. Lewis—known as Jack—she was looking for spiritual answers, not love. Love, after all, wasn’t holding together her crumbling marriage. Everything about New Yorker Joy seemed ill-matched for an Oxford don and the beloved writer of Narnia, yet their minds bonded over their letters. Embarking on the adventure of her life, Joy traveled from America to England and back again, facing heartbreak and poverty, discovering friendship and faith, and against all odds, finding a love that even the threat of death couldn’t destroy.

In this masterful exploration of one of the greatest love stories of modern times, we meet a brilliant writer, a fiercely independent mother, and a passionate woman who changed the life of this respected author and inspired books that still enchant us and change us. Joy lived at a time when women weren’t meant to have a voice—and yet her love for Jack gave them both voices they didn’t know they had.

At once a fascinating historical novel and a glimpse into a writer’s life, Becoming Mrs. Lewis is above all a love story—a love of literature and ideas and a love between a husband and wife that, in the end, was not impossible at all.

Title: Coral

Above the sea, Brooke has nothing left to give. Depression and anxiety have left her feeling isolated. Forgotten. The only thing she can rely on is the numbness she finds within the cool and comforting ocean waves. If only she weren’t stuck at Fathoms—a new group therapy home that promises a second chance at life. But what’s the point of living if her soul is destined to bleed?

Merrick may be San Francisco’s golden boy, but he wants nothing more than to escape his controlling father. When his younger sister’s suicide attempt sends Merrick to his breaking point, escape becomes the only option. If he can find their mom, everything will be made right again—right?

When their worlds collide, all three will do whatever it takes to survive, and Coral might even catch a prince in the process. But what—and who—must they leave behind for life to finally begin?

Taking a new twist on Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved—yet tragic—fairy tale, Coral explores mental health from multiple perspectives, questioning what it means to be human in a world where humanity often seems lost.
