Man, I stink this month

November 29, 2012

This month has been a reading bomb! I have things to read, but so many things have come up and time for reading has dwindled. I'm bound and determined to finish the book I'm on now before the 1st, at least by the 30th. That will happen. Then that will leave me with 4 books to read next month...that's 1 a week. The end of the year is approaching! It is amazing how quickly time has flown, especially as I have been keeping track of my books this year. I am determined to reach my goal.

So, until my next post, I leave you with this...

 And this...

The Lightening Theif

November 15, 2012

I know I touched on this earlier in the year, but here is my full thought on Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan. I had time to kill reading while waiting for a new book to come  out, so I dove into my pile of books I liked.

Percy Jackson is a 12 year old boy, who has no idea who he is and why weird things keep happening to him. When he expelled from his school for issues, not of his doing he heads home. He deals with a horrible step father, but has the best mother on the planet. He can't believe his mom is with the creep. His mother decides to take him on a long weekend trip to their favorite spot on a beach. Percy's mom tells him she wants to talk to him in the morning, however, like a good gripping book, we don't get there.

From this point on, we learn with Percy that he is a demigod, his mother mortal and his father is Posiden, god of the sea. It explains his ADHD, his Dyslexia, and all the weird things that happen to him since he was little. He is a powerful fighter for a 12 year old. He is wired to fight monsters. We follow him on his short time of learning before he is forced into a quest to find who stole Zeus master bolt and to also find a way to save his mother, who disappeared in front of his eyes before reaching the camp made just for demigods, Camp Half Blood.

This is a to read! It is a fun take on mythology and a good stepping stone to get kids to learn about ancient civilizations.

Rebel Heart

November 9, 2012

The tag line isn't true, sorry, Rebel Heart by Moira Young is not better then the Hunger Games.

It took me a little while to get through this book. I wasn't sure about the first book. The story I liked, but the way it was presented really made it hard to get into. This book, the presentation was a little better, it didn't seem to be trying so hard. The words weren't all phonically written this time, which helped quite a bit. However, the story, it didn't seem to go anywhere for the longest time.

Rebel Heart picks up about a week after the first book. However, instead of Saba, being the strong, take charge girl, who knows what she is doing and what she is after, she is letting herself be pushed around by her brother Lugh and is constantly verbally beaten down by him. I want to just slap him and say, hey, your sister just rescued your useless butt, be grateful, instead, he is jealous over the fact that Saba can't wait to get back to Jack, who had to take care of a mission for a friend who was killed in the first book. We only hear from him the first chapter, then it is silence for a while.

Lugh spends so much of the book griping at Saba about how, he can't believe how selfish she is, they had the same dream of the same place, she had to go and ruin it. Sorry, boy, she can have her own dream, you can go live yours. I know that he is Saba's brother, but I don't know why she saved him. He is worse then what their little sister was in the first book. They were better off with out him.

Unlike the first book, Blood Red Road, where I was unsure, this one is a not to read!

October Review

November 6, 2012

I'm not so off this time in the month review. :-) It was a slow reading month for October, many things going on since the year is winding down yet again. It's crazy. We are now in November! Anyway, let's get to the books.

To start of the month I continued on with the Twilight Saga and read Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer. Needy, codependent, Bella, chasing after a control freak, Edward, all while trying to figure out her relationship with anger issue having Jacob. Not to read.
I took a break from the other series and started into the third book of the Heroes of Olympus Series, The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan. Such a good, solid, fun read. Percy and Annabeth, what else can I say...these two characters are great! To read!
I moved back to the Twilight Saga to finish Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer. Why not, the movie is about to come out. This is the series, where, I actually enjoy the movies over the books. There is so much wrong with this book, I don't have enough space to type it all out. Not to read.

Right now, my total for the year stands at 43 with 7 more to go for the year. I still have a couple of new books to come out between now and New Years, so hopefully I can reach it.
