EXCERPT:

Rhyme easily blended in with the rest of the on looking crowd.
Asa Kodiak.
The name alone gave him a sour taste on his tongue, but things couldn’t have panned out any better. Kodiak’s new girlfriend was in charge of the crime scene. Not that it would have mattered who had been lead—Kodiak would have been called in once they saw Jenny’s body. Saw the feather.
Asa was right now seeing it. A million thoughts flying through his thick skull—one in particular.
Before the day was out, Kodiak would call for Fiona. Tell her he needed her back in Memphis towork the case, but she’d know that it was Rhyme who had actually beckoned her.
It was time to come home.
To him.

Review: The Curse of Misty Wayfair by Jamie Jo Wright

February 15, 2019

Title: The Curse of Misty Wayfair
Author: Jaime Jo Wright
Publisher: Bethany House
Pages: 352
ISBN: 9780764230301
Publication Date: January 22nd, 2019

About the Book:
Left at an orphanage as a child, Thea Reed vowed to find her mother someday. Now grown, her search takes her to turn-of-the-century Pleasant Valley, Wisconsin. When the clues she finds lead her to a mental asylum, Thea uses her experience as a postmortem photographer to gain access and assist groundskeeper Simeon Coyle in photographing the patients and uncovering the secrets within. However, she never expected her personal quest would reawaken the legend of Misty Wayfair, a murdered woman who allegedly haunts the area and whose appearance portends death.

A century later, Heidi Lane receives a troubling letter from her mother--who is battling dementia--compelling her to travel to Pleasant Valley for answers to her own questions of identity. When she catches sight of a ghostly woman haunting the asylum ruins in the woods, the long-standing story of Misty Wayfair returns--and with it, Heidi's fear for her own life.

As two women across time seek answers about their identities and heritage, they must overcome the threat of the mysterious curse that has them inextricably intertwined.
My Thoughts:
Oh. My. Goodness!!!
The Curse of Misty Wayfair was a book that had everything, absolutely everything in it! Historical fiction, contemporary, murder, mystery, suspense...and maybe a ghost....You have to read the book to find out about that.

This story was fabulous. I honestly didn't know how this story was going to end. I would think I had the mystery solved, but another twist or a new bit of information was discovered and threw my ideas out the window.

The way this story played out was beautiful. It is a split time, it goes between the past and the present. I loved seeing how the two times wove together to give this beautifully written story.

Thea is a girl at the turn of the nineteen hundreds. She was abandoned at the age of 4 by her mother. She only has the very smallest of memories of her. She was adopted at the age of twelve to a couple who traveled take unique photos for families. As an adult, she is on her own. Her adoptive parents have both passed and she has picked up the "family" business.

Heidi is a woman who hasn't been close to her family in years. She felt smothered. Her older sister and mother have always critiqued her. She felt like a black sheep and and just wanted to be away. It also didn't help her anxiety disorder. Now, she is coming back to see her family and her mother who is battling dementia. They had settled in a small town and Heidi is out of her element. She lands in the path another family, the Crawfords, in a very unfortunate way.

The stories of Thea and Heidi were both so very interesting. Similar, but also so very different. They each deal with their own pain and struggles. Their pasts haunt each of them in their own way.

The moving between times was done so well. This story flowed effortlessly. The characters were all so well done. As this story was read, you were given such an amazing visual though Jaime's writing, that it all just came off of the page.

I sadly couldn't read this book non-stop....responsibilities and all...so, I downloaded the audiobook and it was narrated just wonderfully! I was transported into the book.

This was just a fabulous story and I can't wait to see what Jaime Jo Wright will share with us next!

Review: High As the Heavens by Kate Breslin

May 14, 2018

Title: High as the Heavens
Author:Kate Breslin
Publisher: Bethany House
Pages: 395
ISBN: 9780764217814
Publication Date: June 6th, 2017

Synopsis:
A British nurse in WWI German-occupied Brussels, Evelyn Marche spends her days at the hospital and her nights working at a café . . . or so it seems. Eve's most carefully guarded secret is that she also spends her nights carrying out dangerous missions as a spy for a Belgian resistance group.

When a plane crashes as she's en route to a rendezvous, Eve is the first to reach the downed plane and is shocked to recognize the badly injured pilot as British RFC Captain Simon Forrester. She risks her life to conceal him from the Germans, but as the secrets between them grow and the danger mounts, can they still hope to make it out of Belgium alive?
Review:
I was introduced to Kate Breslin with her debut book, For Such a Time. Her detail and masterful story telling captured me into the this WW2. Now, with High As the Heavens, she transported me back to Europe during WW1.

We are introduced to Eve, in what is her present day. She is a nurse working in Belgium, living with her mother and aunt and uncle. She assists in the family restaurant when not helping the injured. As we get to know Eve, there is so much more to her. She has lived with immense joy, and suffered exceptional grief. She has had to make hard, life saving decisions. All of these things has shaped her and her way of thinking, and channeled them into helping other anyway she can.

Simon is a daring British pilot. He comes to Belgium on a mission given to him by his country, but also for another reason, a very personal reason. However, things do not go as planned. When he finally is able to process things around him, he sees and hears things that honestly don't add up. Following him through these events is a nail biting journey.

As I read this story, there were a few moments where I was wondering, "How is this going to work out?" And amazingly enough it did, sometimes in a way I wouldn't think it could or a whole other idea then I ever thought. The story kept me guessing. There was also a time, I wondered, would this certain aspect keep going, I hope it wouldn't, and thankfully it didn't. Once all information was revealed with the characters, the story started to pivot to some fantastic story points.

Simon and Eve were so well developed, it was easy to slip into their story. There was a lot of fantastic historical points weaved in and really made me want to research more of this time.

I have been on an audio-book kick lately, and recently downloaded this title. The narrator was superb. She took this fantastic story and then enhanced it with her reading. It was easy to get caught up.

Review: Still Life by Dani Pettrey

April 24, 2017

Title: Still Life
Author: Dani Pettrey
Publisher: Bethany House
Pages: 352
ISBN: 978-0-7642-1295-6
Publication Date: January 31st, 2017

Synopsis:
Someone Is Out There. Watching Her. Waiting.
Blacklisted in the photography business over a controversial shot, Avery Tate answered an ad for a crime-scene photographer. She expected to be laughed at, but crime-scene analyst Parker Mitchell hired her outright--and changed her life. But six months ago, when her feelings for Parker became too strong, she left his employ to sort out her heart.

Now, for the first time, Avery is facing the world that rejected her to attend the gallery opening of a photography exhibit for which her friend modeled. But the only image of her friend is a chilling photo of her posing as if dead--and the photographer insists he didn't take the shot. Worse, her friend can't be found, and so Avery immediately calls Parker for help.

As Avery, Parker, and their friends in law enforcement dig into the mystery, they find themselves face-to-face with a relentless and deadly threat.
Review:
Still life is the second book in the Chesapeake Valor Series, following Cold Shot. Still Life not only kept the momentum going for the series, but added a lot more to it and made me look forward to the third book in the series, Blind Spot!

Avery Tate was such an interesting character. Even though she faced backlash from a decision of a photo she took, she didn't give up on her passion and sought out a new career field in it. A crime scene photographer is something that is a grisly job. They have to see everything and then some. Dani was able to capture the profession in a respectful way and made it very entertaining.

Parker Mitchell was another fun character to follow along with. He meshed with Avery so well. The romance between the two was fun and the added suspense of the mystery added to the fun of the story and made it very hard to put down.

I loved the photography aspect that was featured in this story. We usually read stories on the detectives, but I really liked that this offered a little more into the world of solving crime. The little details shine through with these stories.

I can't wait for the third book, Blind Spot.

The moment their eyes meet, Willow no longer feels invisible. Drawn to the vulnerability behind Ashton’s mask of rage, she sinks deeper into his sinister world and begins to question whether he’s a villain, a savior, or both.

But the closer they get to uncovering the truth, the darker the secrets become, and Ashton fears his return to Gilt Hollow will destroy everyone he loves, especially the girl he left behind.
Review:
I have been anxious to read Lorie Landon's books. I have heard nothing but praise for her co-authored Doon series. Then when I head that she was coming out with her own story I was very excited to read it, especially after I read how intriguing it sounded.

Gilt Hollow is a book that just captures you with the just the description. It is also a book that grabs a hold of you and pulls you in and doesn't let go. This story offered a lot of questions for you to think about as you read through. It gave you glimpses and then sent you to think about something else. Lorie's writing style was fun!

Willow is a girl who is in a different type of circumstance then most will find themselves in. You are put right in the middle of her story. Ashton is a boy who has had four years of his life taken from in in prison. He has hardened and is angry, which considering everything is understandable.

These two friends have led very different lives in these four years, but it was an interesting story to follow as we dove into there experiences. It was hard to turn away from the pages once started. It was a very gripping story. The level of emotions you could feel with the people of this story was great. There was good depth to them that made this story pop. I can't wait to go and read Doon now.

The loot taken that night has never been found and he believes she knows where it's hidden--only her memory of that night has always been unreliable. Can she remember enough to find her way to safety?
Review:
I am a big fan of Dani Pettrey's stories. They are a wonderful mix of suspense, mystery, and romance. I have also read a couple of books by Lynette Eason and have really enjoyed them. Sadly, in all of my time reading, I haven't read anything by Dee Henderson till this book. I need to fix that now and look into her books!

The novella collection in Sins of the Past was a fantastic mix of authors. Dani Pettrey's story was a fantastic prequel of sorts to her Alaskan series. I loved the look back on the family, to two members of the family we never got to officially meet.

Dee Henderson's story was written so well. It didn't feel like a novella at all. It was the perfect short story. The idea of it all, I could see being plossible and the mystery kept me wondering till the revelation.

The final story by Lynette Eason closed out this book well. The suspense and mystery was so entertaining and the story just kept me hooked.

These three authors really are the top of their genre. If you haven't read any of these authors and have always wondered about them, this book would be a wonderful start. I'm fairly new to the contemporary suspense genre, and I loved being able to read these new stories and try a new to me author.

Review:
I have been a fan of regency books for a while, so when a new regency book comes out I get a little excited to see how an author will portray this romanticized time. I also enjoy seeing how the authors will build their world and if they stick close to Austen or only use that as a just a base.

Right off the bat of Starving Hearts, I could see that Janine Mendenthall is a fan of Jane Austen. She did her best it seemed as to try to stick to the style of writing. The story for me did start off a little slow, but in all honesty, reading Austen did too.

As the story started I didn't really feel much of connection to Annette. She started off as a little childish, but as the story moved on she did grow on me and she seemed to mature as the the real background of the story opened up. This book focused mainly on the slave trade in England and the abolishment of it.

I did like how the villain was in this story. A well crafted villain helps move the story along and offer the right amount of suspense and mystery.

There were some things about this story that popped out at me that took away from my attention, but I want to try to read and enjoy the story, so I tried to over look some things and not nitpick.

If you are into regency based stories, it might be a book you want to try.
