Welcome to the Blog + Review Blitz for Shoal Waters by Normandie Fischer, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Shoal Waters Title: Shoal Waters
Series: Carolina Coast Stories #6
Author: Normandie Fischer
Publisher: Sleepy Creek Press
Release Date: June 14, 2022
Genre: Inspirational/Clean Women's Fiction

Dementia, mad gunmen, and a yearning for something more make life difficult for the Beaufort folk in this series finale.

Georgie's mind threatens to go walkabout, and she'd better get help soon if she's to stop her daughter from taking over. Enter granddaughter, Jeminy, a songwriter from L.A., and Eric, her lawyer.

Jeminy hates herself and is pretty sure God does, too. There’s that huge unforgiveable sin, plus the boyfriend/manager who dumped her and lost her a music deal. Her mistakes. Her fault.

When Mother plots to tuck Nana Georgie neatly into a nursing home to gain access to Nana’s money, Jeminy hightails it out of L.A. and back to Beaufort. God may still hate her in North Carolina, but at least she’ll be on hand to protect her beloved grandmother.

Enter Eric, the lawyer hired to help Georgie protect herself--and possibly Jeminy, too. But Eric just rescued his orphaned stepson from Social Services, and while he’s adept at legal briefs and courtroom dramas, classrooms and angry second graders are brand new territory.

Guitar in hand, Jeminy tries to write songs to jumpstart her flagging career, but when someone threatens her life, she has to ask why. Could it have to do with the money missing from her bank accounts (and maybe her unstable ex)? If she prays for help, will God even listen to someone with her baggage?

With the help of the Beaufort crew, a new father and a terrified musician struggle to safeguard everyone they love, but it’s going to take more than good neighbors to show each of them the true meaning of grace.

EXCERPT:

Georgina Chapter 20

And, in the process of bringing it [the phone] to her ear, she lost her last thought. It had been there, hadn’t it, because she was holding the phone in her hand. But why? Who had she intended to call?
Closing her eyes, she shuddered.
Her mind kept tripping off like this, willy-nilly, as if it had decided to go walkabout, leaving the rest of her behind. Feeling this, knowing it, made a spasm roil up from low in her belly. She swiped at a tear because this could not be happening. It couldn’t. Yet look at her, staring at the phone, no clue as to why she held it. Was she about to call someone? Had she already made a call?
She couldn’t remember. She could not remember.
And, oh, my, when had those veins started protruding right below her knuckles? Look at the brown spots.
What on earth was she supposed to do with the phone?
She put it down on the kitchen counter. Maybe enlightenment would come as she fixed herself a cup of tea. The heat of it would be good for her bones, and maybe it would unjumble her thoughts.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Normandie Fischer
Normandie Fischer had the best of several worlds: a Southern heritage, access to schooling in the DC area (which meant lots of cultural adventures), and several years of sculpture studies in Italy. It might have been better for her if she'd used all these opportunities more wisely, but it's possible that the imperfect and the unwise also add fodder for the artist and the writer.

Her life changed radically when she married the love of her life at an age when some would have said she was over the hill and way past her prime. (Clichés often speak the truth, don't they?) A lifelong sailor, she was delighted to find that Michael also longed to cruise lovely waters, which is what they did from Northern CA to Mexico, spending too-few years in the incomparable Sea of Cortez. Sea Venture, their 50' ketch, is back home in North Carolina now because Normandie's mama needed care. Still, it's gorgeous there, too, and she can write from home as easily as she could on the boat.

Her two grown children and two step-sons are handsome (or gorgeous, as the case may be), talented, and a delight. And now there's a granddaughter and grandson in the mix--woohoo! She just wishes they lived a lot closer to home.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Heirlooms
Title: Heirlooms
Author: Sandra Byrd
Publisher: Tyndale
Release Date: July 5, 2022
Genre: Dual Timeline Fiction,Christian

Answering a woman’s desperate call for help, young Navy widow Helen Devries opens her Whidbey Island home as a refuge to Choi Eunhee. As they bond over common losses and a delicate, potentially devastating secret, their friendship spans the remainder of their lives.

After losing her mother, Cassidy Quinn spent her childhood summers with her gran, Helen, at her farmhouse. Nourished by her grandmother’s love and encouragement, Cassidy discovers a passion that she hopes will bloom into a career. But after Helen passes, Cassidy learns that her home and garden have fallen into serious disrepair. Worse, a looming tax debt threatens her inheritance. Facing the loss of her legacy and in need of allies and ideas, Cassidy reaches out to Nick, her former love, despite the complicated emotions brought by having him back in her life.

Cassidy inherits not only the family home but a task, spoken with her grandmother’s final breaths: ask Grace Kim—Eunhee’s granddaughter—to help sort through the contents of the locked hope chest in the attic. As she and Grace dig into the past, they unearth their grandmothers’ long-held secret and more. Each startling revelation reshapes their understanding of their grandmothers and ultimately inspires the courage to take risks and make changes to own their lives.

Set in both modern-day and midcentury Whidbey Island, Washington, this dual-narrative story of four women—grandmothers and granddaughters—intertwines across generations to explore the secrets we keep, the love we pass down, and the heirlooms we inherit from a well-lived life.

"This is women's fiction as it is meant to be written with intriguing characters making decisions that ripple through generations." - Library Journal, starred review

EXCERPT:

Eunhee looked down at the dinners. “I have not eaten a meal in an aluminum tray. Is this likeprepared meals for away duty in the military?”

“Kind of.” A small ice rink of gravy teetered like a lopsided hat atop Eunhee’s portion of
turkey. “Oh! It needs more time in the oven. I’ll be right back.”
Once Helen returned with the meals, fully heated, Eunhee ate slowly, smiling between each
bite of turkey, cornbread, and buttered peas. Helen reached over to take their trays and noticed Eunhee’s was largely uneaten. “Don’t you like TV dinners?”

“They could use a few spices,” Eunhee admitted.

Helen’s heart sank. “I wanted to offer a comfortable, soft nest to you, my new friend.”
Eunhee smiled and looked her straight in the eye. “Perfect cooking does not make a good
friend or a soft nest. A soft heart makes for a soft nest, and love and honest talk make good
friends.”

EXCERPT:

Rhyme easily blended in with the rest of the on looking crowd.
Asa Kodiak.
The name alone gave him a sour taste on his tongue, but things couldn’t have panned out any better. Kodiak’s new girlfriend was in charge of the crime scene. Not that it would have mattered who had been lead—Kodiak would have been called in once they saw Jenny’s body. Saw the feather.
Asa was right now seeing it. A million thoughts flying through his thick skull—one in particular.
Before the day was out, Kodiak would call for Fiona. Tell her he needed her back in Memphis towork the case, but she’d know that it was Rhyme who had actually beckoned her.
It was time to come home.
To him.

Review: In Search of a Prince by Toni Shiloh

February 14, 2022

Title: In Search of a Prince
Author: Toni Shiloh
Publisher: Bethany House
Pages: 384
ISBN: 9780764238956
Publication Date: February 1st, 2022

About the Book:
It seems like a dream come true . . . until it forces her to question everything.

Brielle Adebayo is fully content teaching at a New York City public school and taking annual summer vacations with her mother to Martha's Vineyard. But everything changes when her mom drops a bombshell--Brielle is really a princess in the island kingdom of Ọlọrọ Ilé, off the coast of Africa, and she must immediately assume her royal position, since the health of her grandfather, the king, is failing.

Distraught by all the secrets her mother kept, Brielle is further left spinning when the Ọlọrọ Ilé Royal Council brings up an old edict that states she must marry before her coronation, or the crown will pass to another. Brielle is uncertain if she even wants the throne, and with her world totally shaken, where will she find the courage to take a chance on love and brave the perils a wrong decision may bring?
My Thoughts:
Review from Bookstagram Tour:

This book! Goodness. From the start this story it had me hooked.

Most girls I know have dreamed of finding out that they are a long lost princess, but for Bri, it wasn’t a dream. Her whole world is turned upside down as everything she knew was not true. The range of emotions she went through was strong and real. You felt them with her as Toni wrote about Bri’s journey. The depth that Toni writes is simply stunning! Her characters are just real. You feel for Brielle and you just want to hug Iris, her best friend. Who I thought was fantastic as they maneuvered through this new territory together.
Brielle’s world is thrown upside down, but her faith in the Lord is strong. She turns to Him for guidance and her faith is comforting to read. Her world isn’t perfect, but she puts all her trust in the One who is.

This is the first book I’ve read from Toni Shiloh, but not my last. She has such an amazing talent for storytelling. Her character leap from the pages and you are right there with them. With my commute, I live off of audiobooks, and the narrator for this story really made this story pop. I had a hard time stepping away, but when I did, I was able to jump right back in.
This book is everything you want in a story, right down to the most gorgeous cover.

I honestly can’t wait to read more books from Toni, this is one of my top books for the year.

Review: Tacos For Two by Betsy St. Amant

January 26, 2022

Title: Tacos For Two
Author: Betsy St. Amant
Publisher: Revell
Pages: 336
ISBN: 9780800738907
Publication Date: October 12th, 2021

About the Book:
Two unlikely chefs. One life-changing contest. There can only be one winner . . . right?

Rory Perez, a food truck owner who can't cook, is struggling to keep the business she inherited from her aunt out of the red--and an upcoming contest during Modest's annual food truck festival seems the best way to do it. The prize money could finally give her a solid financial footing and keep her cousin with special needs paid up at her beloved assisted living home. Then maybe Rory will have enough time to meet the man she's been talking to via an anonymous online dating site.

Jude Strong is tired of being a puppet at his manipulative father's law firm, and the food truck festival seems like the perfect opportunity to dive into his passion for cooking and finally call his life his own. But if he loses the contest, he's back at the law firm for good. Failure is not an option.

Complications arise when Rory's chef gets mono and she realizes she has to cook after all. Then Jude discovers that his stiffest competition is the same woman he's been falling for online the past month.

Will these unlikely chefs sacrifice it all for the sake of love? Or will there only ever be tacos for one?
My Thoughts:
Do you love You've Got Mail? How about Shop Around the Corner? Or The Good Ol' Summer Time? Well, if you like any or all of these, or if you have read Dear Mr. Knightly by Katherine Reay, another offering into this genre...I have the book for you! Tacos For Two. This is such a fun and modern take on this tale of competing business people, who get connected and don't know it. I've watched all of these movies and have loved them all...especially You've Got Mail. I could curl up and watch it all the time.

I was interested to see how Betsy would be able to play it out with the characters not knowing each other with the world wide web at their fingertips, but it was done brilliantly! I would not survive on the dating site that was presented in this book. I would take any detail and ferret the information out, but that is what I do and the fact Rory was cool with taking it slow and not knowing made her all the more interesting.

Rory is such a loving character. She cares for her cousin, and the people she works with. She wants to keep her Aunt's food truck alive....even though she doesn't cook, which I absolutely loved. She comes off as a girl who could burn water, but keeping her aunts legacy alive is greater than her inept cooking ability.

Jude, goodness, what a guy. He is one who has had to deal with a lot bullying and forced competition in his family. He is the black sheep of his family, but that isn't a bad thing. He deal with a dad who is overbearing and hold the family money over his head. A brother that is always wanting to prove that he is better then Jude. But he had a caring nanny growing up that instilled into him a love of cooking.

The personalities between Rory and Jude are very similar. They are both ones just trying to find a path against the odds. Reading their story was fun and sweet. But of course there are some very emotional stakes and watching them play out, you are hoping it all works out, because you can't not like these two.

If you're looking for a book that is hard to put down, try this one!
