Author Con 2015

May 17, 2015

Calling all book lovers and book bloggers in the DFW area!

I just discovered that a local library in the area is hosting their first annual Author Con! They will be hosting many local authors to the Dallas, Texas area this Tuesday, May the 19th from 6pm to 8pm! It sounds like a fun time.

Read any good books lately? The Friends of the Sachse Public Library will host the first Sachse Author Con on May 19th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 pm. This celebration of local authors will feature titles ranging from children’s picture books to young adult, as well as a variety of adult genres, including inspirational nonfiction, thriller and suspense novels. Please make plans to bring your whole family to join us for a fascinating opportunity to meet and mingle with local authors, purchase your favorite books (cash or check only), and enter your name in a drawing for a chance to win one of the showcased books.

Several children’s and young adult authors will be featured at the event. Bella and Charlie Campbell, two young siblings who have authored children’s books, will present two titles, Building Bridges of Friendship and Got Mojo. Jolynn Singh, local children’s author, will share her picture book entitled The Little Olive Tree. Alan Elliot, historical and children’s author, will present Willy, the Texas Longhorn as well as historical titles for adults. Amanda Thrasher, who won the Mom’s Choice Award for her young adult novel entitled The Greenlee Project, will be on hand to talk to tweens and teens. Lindsay Cummings, another local Young Adult author, will be showcasing her thriller entitled the Murder Complex. Courtney Gallimore will share her first young adult romance-mystery, Broken.

Inspirational readers will have some enticing reads from which to choose. Jema Hill Cook has written a 30 day devotional book for adults, Reflections: What I Know to Be True. Kathryn Eriksen has written an inspirational novel Heart Dancing: A Story Alchemy Adventure. Michelle Moore will share her inspirational book entitled Arm Yourself: Equipping Ourselves with the Armor of God.

The Sachse Author Con will proudly showcase a variety of adult genres. Ruth Glover, a Sachse resident, retired recruiter and active volunteer for the library, will share her nonfiction book entitled More than a Paycheck: Inspiration and Tools for Career Change. Lena Nelson Dooley, a multi-award winning author, will share her historical novels and contemporary novellas. Review: To Win Her Favor by Tamera Alexander

May 15, 2015

Title: To Win Her Favor
Author: Tamera Alexander
Publisher: Zondervan
Pages: 352
ISBN: 9780310291077
Publication Date: May 12, 2015

Synopsis:
A gifted rider in a world where ladies never race, Maggie Linden is determined that her horse will become a champion. But the one man who could help her has vowed to stay away from thoroughbred racing forever.

An Irishman far from home, Cullen McGrath left a once prosperous life in England because of a horse racing scandal that nearly ruined him. He’s come to Nashville for a fresh start, hoping to buy land and begin farming, all while determined to stay as far away from thoroughbred racing as possible. But starting over proves harder than he’d wagered, especially when Maggie Linden’s father makes him an offer he shouldn’t accept yet cannot possibly refuse.

Maggie is certain that her mare, Bourbon Belle, can take the top purse in the inaugural Peyton Stakes, the richest race ever run in America. Maggie only needs the chance to prove it. To give her that chance—and to save Linden Downs from being sold to the highest bidder—Maggie’s father, aging, yet wily as ever, makes a barter. His agreement includes one tiny, troublesome detail—Maggie must marry a man she’s never met. A man she never would have chosen for herself.
Review:
I have been hearing many wonderful things about Tamera Alexander's books for quite a while, so much so, I've gone out and have bought many of them! Sadly though, I haven't had the opportunity to read any of them until recently, when the opportunity to read To Win Her Favor came about.

The detail, the history, and the beautiful story telling all come together in this book. Tamera has an amazing talent for story telling and it shines through these pages! Her character development of Maggie and Cullen is wonderful. They are very real and deal with with many things, but they do their best and rely on their faith.

I've always been a big fan of Gone with the Wind. To Win Her Favor is similar to topics brought up in the book (the movie is drastically different by the way), and the way that Tamera Alexander presented it is hard and brutal, but it is truth. The prejudices after the war was high. It was a hard time and this book showed it. But the story wasn't all about that, it was also a sweet love story, and horse story! This book had a rich background. It brought everything in an intertwined them well.

I can't wait to read the other books now in this series, this was a fabulous tale to get lost in!
