Top Ten Tuesday: Books that started it

April 1, 2014

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week features a book related topic that allows you to spotlight your Top Ten.

Topic:
Top Ten "Gateway" Books/Authors In My Reading Journey

1. Christian Historical Romance
Love Comes Softly by Janette Oke
This book started it all. From here I dove into so many other historical romance books. I love them!

2. The Young Adult Genre
Twilight by Stephanie Meyers
From Twilight, I went on to read Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Hunger Games, and many others.

3. Contemporary Christian Fiction
Submerged by Dani Pettrey
This is actually a new genre to me. I'm slowly wading deeper into more contemporary stories.

4. Classics
Little House by Laura Ingalls Wilder
The Little House Series really opened to the door to other classics. From here I went on to Louisa May Alcott and Charlotte Bronte and many others.

5. Historical Fiction
The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara
History...you can't go wrong with it! The details have always captured me.

6. Science Fiction mixed w/ Historical Fiction
Non-Christian
Outlander by Diana Gaboldon
Technically this is historical romance...but it has time travel and it led me to read other stories, such as Game of Thrones.

7. The First Book I Ever Enjoyed
The Monster at the End of this Book by Jon Stone
I couldn't not list the first book that I ever loved! It's the one that started it all!

Oy, I hate that I have to put up Twilight, but I won't lie. I will say, Twilight led me to wanting to read Harry Potter and other fantastic books in the middle grade/ya genres, so despite how I feel about this story...it led me others.

What books got you started in your top genres?

  1. Love it! This is my first time participating in the Top Ten meme and I really enjoyed it! I have a Jeanette Oke and the Little House in the Big Woods on my list as well. The Alaskan Courage series by Dani Pettrey has been so much fun to read- they are some of my favorites. I can't wait for her new one to come out!
