Synopsis:
Jade returns home to Chapel Springs after years of protecting her fragile heart. Then along comes Daniel, making her long to dance again.

Creative and complicated, Jade McKinley felt like a weed in a rose garden growing up in Chapel Springs. When she left, she thought she’d never look back. But now, pregnant, alone, and broke, she has no other choice but to return.

The mayor of Chapel Springs, Daniel Dawson, has been an honorary member of the McKinley family for years. While his own home life was almost non-existent, Daniel fit right into the boisterous McKinley family. He’s loved Jade for years, but she always saw him as a big brother. Now that she’s back, his feelings are stronger than ever.

As Jade attempts to settle in, nothing feels right. God seems far away, she’s hiding secrets from her family, and she’s strangely attracted to the man who’s always called her “squirt." Finding her way home may prove more difficult than she imagined.
Review:
Up until the last couple of years, I will admit, I stuck solely to historical fiction. I don't know why I never read any contemporary fiction, but I could just kick myself now for having waited so long to dive into this genre, but I'm glad I'm reading it now. Especially after reading Dancing with Fireflies by Denise Hunter. This was a story I couldn't put down. In one evening, the book was consumed.

Before I go into the review, I will say that this story deals with the subject of rape. It's not graphic, it is not displayed, but the aftermath of it is dealt with. It is handled in a way that it is respectful.

Jade McKinley is a part of a loving and big family. However, hurts from the past pushed her to move away. After Jade endures an attack, she has no other place to go to but home. Jade is a strong, a bit stubborn, but strong none the less. She has dealt with tragedy, but she handles it in such a mature manner. She wants to do her best to provide for herself and her baby that she is expecting. However, the hurts of the past keep her from opening up to any potential leads in love.

Daniel Dawson had a rough childhood. He was left to live with his grandma, while his father and mother followed the political trail to DC. The only family he has really known is that of his Grandma and the McKinley clan. However, over the time, he had come to care for Jade. With those feelings, it allows him to be there for Jade. He is such a compassionate character. It's hard not to like Daniel!

This story is of broken people, but it is also a story of hope and finding the path God has for you. Dancing with Fireflies offered several laughs and a few moments of sadness, but it truly is an inspirational story. The strength that Jade has and the love that Daniel shows was a delight to read about.
