Into the Whirlwind by Elizabeth Camden takes off like a shot, grabbing a hold and hangs on to you for the whole ride. Elizabeth Camden throws the reader right into the midst of the Great Chicago Fire. You are running through the streets, avoiding the burning ash, falling debris, the crush of the sea of humanity, and the sparks that assault anyone in their paths. We open the pages into the tragedy of Mollie Knox and Zack Kazmarek and it's hard to put down.

Mollie Knox thrives in her life of order. She is content to run her father's watch factory and sale them to the most prestige store in Chicago. She loves her employees, they are the only family she has left. She feels a strong connection to them since they all served with her father in the Civil War. She feels it's her duty to watch after them and to make sure their jobs are secure. Mollie is full of compassion and love for the people closest to her. She is a hard worker, doing what she can for her company, she will work the books and even help assemble the watches. However, the fire threatens everything she holds dear.

Zack Kazmarek has worked with Mollie for three years. He has been the go between for her watch company and the retailer who buys her watches. His loyalty to his company has kept him from speaking of how he feels, but to him the fire gives him a level field he has been looking for. He is a guy who doesn't hold to traditions. He will speak his mind. He is a gentleman, but he isn't rigid. He is passionate and he cares deeply for his family.

The romance that happened in this book started off differently then most stories, I thought, it was interesting to see how it played out with the way it was presented. It kept me wondering, how is this going to work? What is going to happen? It was an interesting twist to the story.

The devastation presented in the book is heartbreaking. It kept me thinking of this past spring/summer with the massive outbreaks of tornadoes and the planet explosion in West, TX, but the book also presented what happens when disasters hit.The bringing together of the people. The unity that is felt. The desire to help those around us. The hope of something new rising from the ashes. Pushing through and rising up and moving forward.
It was a fantastic story!
