The Red Siren by MaryLu Tyndall was such an interesting twist on the pirate story! Instead of your usual gruff and determined man in charge of a pirate ship, we find that Faith Westcott, daughter of a British Royal Navy Admiral is the notorious female pirate that rumors have been circulating for years about. She is the captain of the Red Siren, a vessel she acquired in one of her early pirating schemes.Being the fairer of sexes has it's advantages in pirating, Faith has found out. However, Faith is not a pirate for revenue only, it is her way of protecting her two younger sisters from the fate her eldest sister has suffered. Marriage to a man who only knows how to use and abuse.
On her mother's death bed, Faith promised her mother that she would look after her sisters. Not knowing what else to do, she makes a bargain with her father, if she raises enough money to support her and her sisters, he won't force them into loveless marriages. Not knowing what else to do to raise money, Faith turns to pirating. Faith is a stubborn girl, determined to protect her sisters. She cares only for their safety and to help guide them away from harm, but it is harder with the secret that Faith is keeping from them.
Dajon is an upstanding British Naval captain who has a brief and infuriating meeting with Faith on a voyage while he was working in his father's shipping business. While on a return trip home, Dajon offers help to a distressed ship, only to find it really pirates led by Faith. His ship is taken from right under him. Five years pass and he is sent to America to help track down pirates that have held cities hostage and into the house of Faith and her family.
It was a good and interesting story that kept me reading. Each character seems to carry their own secret and agenda, some good, some bad, but each part added another level. The story also has a very real aspect to it. During tough times, people either will turn toward God for comfort and help or they will turn and run. Both are presented and it shows how people can grow and learn in both cases.
Too Read!
