Discussion Tuesday: Novels Vs. Series

June 18, 2013

I've been thing about this lately. Which do you prefer more...A single novel or a series?

The reason I've been thinking about this is that, I've been looking back at my older books (i.e. Gone With the Wind), and I think that, that book has everything I need in a story. It's solid all the way through. I can't picture it with more (granted, I would have loved to have known what extra stuff Margret Mitchell had written and then had her husband destroy after she died...), but that is all still just part of the original story and wasn't expected to be expanded on into other books.

I then look at stories that span several books (Harry Potter), I can' imagine that story in just one book, unless you want a several thousand page tome, that could break your wrist.

For me, it does depend on the story.

What do you think? I would love to hear!

  1. I couldn't agree with you more. As much as I love that some of the books I adore had more to the story than what was included in book one, I just want to know the ending without having to wait on the sequels. I'm really bad about waiting until all the books in a series come out before I'll even pick up the first one.

    1. Took care of it! :-)

That's the other problem. Waiting for sequels. I picked up a book, it sounded great, the cover was beautiful, but I found out it was the first in a series and the book just came out. So, I'm a little hesitant to read it right off, so the wait won't be as long.

    2. One other thing, if it is a series of stand alone novels...I can deal with that. It's in the same time frame, but the characters are all different. The wait for those aren't bad since the books are all wrapped up nicely.

  2. I love a good series. Once I become emotionally involved with a book and its characters I find it hard for the story to just end. With a series you get to prolong the post book depression. :)

    1. The emotional connection is a good point. Having many books does prolong the farewell and the depression. :-)
